The Institute for Environmental Economics and World Trade is particularly engaged fields of research in an international context. The inter- and transdisciplinarity of the institute is reflected in the research areas. These include topics from the fields of development, environment and trade.

Specifically, the Institute deals with questions of climate change, marketing, agriculture and land use policy, energy and water management, but also digitalization and migration. The Institute's research also focuses on impact assessments, value chain analyses and analyses of livelihoods, food security, poverty, (in)equality, vulnerability and, above all, sustainability. Furthermore, problems of transformation, social networks, shocks and risks are researched.
